What Are Cookies?

Cookies are small text files that are placed on your device when you visit a website. They are widely used to make websites work, or work more efficiently, to remember your preferences, and to provide information to the owners of the site.

The Cookies We Use

When you first visit our site we ask for your consent to use cookies. You can accept all, reject all, or choose categories individually — you can always keep just essential cookies. Non-essential cookies are only set after you opt in (we use Google Consent Mode, so analytics and advertising storage stay disabled by default). The table below explains the categories we use and why.

CategoryPurpose
Essential cookiesThese are necessary for the website to function and cannot be switched off. They are set in response to actions you take, such as remembering your cookie preferences, keeping items in your cart, submitting forms, and keeping the site secure. They do not store personally identifiable information. You can block them in your browser settings, but some parts of the site may then not work.
Analytics cookiesSet only if you opt in. We use Google Analytics (including the Google Signals advertising feature) to understand how visitors use the site so we can improve it — for example, which pages are most and least popular and how visitors move around the site. For visitors who are signed in to a Google account and have turned on Ads Personalization, Google associates this usage data with their Google account to provide us with aggregated demographics and interests data and cross-device reporting. This information is aggregated; we cannot identify you individually from it.
Advertising cookiesSet only if you opt in. We may link Google Analytics with Google Ads to build audiences from how you use the site and show you relevant ads on Google’s network (remarketing and ads personalization), and to measure when an ad leads to a visit or purchase. This uses conversion and click-measurement cookies (such as _gcl_au and the gclid ad-click identifier). See the section below for how to opt out.

We also use Ahrefs Web Analytics to measure aggregate site traffic. It is cookieless: it sets no cookies, stores nothing on your device, and anonymises IP addresses, so it runs without consent and is not affected by your choices above.

Google Analytics, Google Signals & Google Ads

We use Google Analytics together with Google Signals, a Google Analytics Advertising Feature. When you accept analytics cookies, and where you are signed in to a Google account with Ads Personalization enabled, Google may associate the session data collected on our site with your Google account to give us aggregated demographics, interests, and cross-device insights. We adhere to the Google Advertising Features Policy, including the rules on sensitive categories.

If you also accept advertising cookies, we may link Analytics with Google Ads. This lets us build audiences from your activity for remarketing and ads personalization across Google’s network, and use auto-tagging to measure conversions from our ads. We do not run advertising cookies unless you opt in to the advertising category.

You can control or opt out of this at any time:

Managing Cookies

You can withdraw or change your consent at any time using the cookie icon at the bottom-left of every page. This only changes your preference going forward — cookies already stored on your device remain until they expire, so to remove them use your browser settings. Most browsers allow you to view, delete, and block cookies. For more information about cookies, including how to see what cookies have been set, visit aboutcookies.org or allaboutcookies.org.
